Butterfly Cremation Urns Celebrate The Season

September 28, 2014 urngarden.com

blue purple butterfly urn

The signs are there. Crunchy leaves. The hummingbirds were so active two weeks ago, hitting the feeders hard, fueling up for the flight out of here. I took the feeder down. I still see a few monarchs, in fact one flew in my face, almost flaunting it, like “take one more look, baby, I’m gone.” Four days ago a swam of butterflies could be seen on radar flapping south.

One of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen was a cluster of monarch butterflies in a tree line on the school playground near my home. It was about this time of year and it seemed like a butterfly meetup before they hit the sky.

That event inspired our monarch butterfly collection featuring a small scale keepsake urn that is perfect for the person that loves bling and symbolism. This one has a hinged lid that opens to reveal a small storage compartment that will hold a bit of cremains.

There’s also a full size adult urn that can either be mounted on the wall or displayed just laying flat, just as beautiful either way. This is a true art piece, made in the USA by skilled ceramic artists who are passionate about the unique memorials they create. The monarch butterfly urn is made to order, so this one takes a couple of weeks to produce but is worth the wait.

September is a strange month. Summer winds down and I get a little melancholy. Shorter days as the season changes and triggers the first pop of color. But before we move to full on fall, I want to focus on the light and the flight. Our butterfly collection of cremation urns that honor the families that maybe didn’t have a fun summer and fought long battles or had sudden turn of events.

The Ruby Butterfly cremation urn is inspired by my grandmother, who have me a ruby ring to remember her after she died. It was her birthstone and an old family name as well. This urn is a deep Ruby color with inlayed mother of pearl butterflies that glow against the dark background. So pretty and can be laser engraved with names and dates.

The blue butterfly is popular with families with varied shades of indigo and purple. This one can be engraved with a pendant and comes in smaller sizes if a family wanted small keepsakes to share some of the ashes.

The symbol of the butterfly can signify profound change, and in early Christianity it was a symbol of the soul.  Some Native American tribes considered the transformation from ugly caterpillar to beautifully winged creature was a message from the spirit world and if you were lucky enough to have one land on your shoulder it was a sign of comfort and good fortune.  Blackfoot Indians believed that the butterfly was the bringer of dreams and mothers would stitch the image on pieces of buckskin and tie it a fussy babies clothes to help comfort the child and bring sleep.

Seasons of Life: Flight of the Hummingbird Cremation Urn

September 10, 2014 urngarden.com

believe you can inspirational graphic

Stepped out last night to look at the last super moon of season, it was warm and the air was thick. As I stood in the moonlight I felt a little melancholy as I always do in September. Winding down the short summer, the beginning of 4th quarter, and a sinking feeling when I see Christmas already on the shelves in the stores.

This September I want to squeeze every last drop of sunshine and fun out it. This Indian Summer, right?  But I can’t deny the change. The leaves are falling. Flowers are fading. And the hummingbirds are bulking up, getting ready to fly out of here. They are on the feeders constantly. It’s been fun to watch as cats lay in wait by bird bath, hoping to get lucky.

Hummingbirds were sign for a client in Florida who was looking for a cremation urn for her mom. She’d been shopping online and was starting to get exasperated with the whole process. Her mother was the matriarch of the family and the client was trying to get four sisters to agree on a selection. Finally, she found this:

She knew this was the perfect urn when she saw it. Her sisters agreed. Cool, calm blue, her mom’s favorite color with a hummingbird sipping nectar from the flowers to energize for a long flight. She was crazy about the tiny bird and loved to have coffee on her lanai in the mornings and watch them swarm her feeders.

Greet Each Day
That’s the theme for September. So instead of looking backward at the calendar, I’ll try to see (and seize) the new day and stop staring at the past. If we can help you move forward on your journey, we’re here.

It’s a popular choice for families that want a cremation urn to honor a June birth date or perhaps their loved one was named Rose, or maybe even a graceful way to honor someone who’s personality was a little “thorny” and hard to handle.

If you want something that symbolizes many feelings and heart felt emotion, this urn says it all with a multi color bouquet of antique roses in red for passion and love. Pink means sweetness and grace, and white for fresh new beginnings.

Incorporating a floral sympathy piece like a few long stemmed roses, a wreath, or even a few petals scattered at the memorial service adds a touch of elegance and will exemplify the theme of love.

rose wreathVictorians believed in the language of flowers and that each color has its own meaning and interpretation. Do you know what emotion you are expressing when you choose a rose color?

Roses and their intoxicating fragrance have had a long and colorful history with fossilized evidence dating back 35 million years. However, it wasn’t until the 15th century that they started being used as symbolic gestures during England’s War of the Roses. Modern-day roses can be traced back to the late 18th century when they were cultivated and introduced into Europe from China.

Rose Colors and Meanings

While there are many variations of rose colors, these are the most popular and their meanings:

  • Red: Love, affection, romance, desire, courage, passion and appreciation
  • Dark Red: Deep passion and dying love
  • Bright Pink: Recognition, gratitude, appreciation and admiration
  • Pale Peach: Modesty
  • Pink: Elegance, grace and admiration for sweetness and beauty
  • Purple and Lilac: Magnetism, majesty and enchantment
  • Green: Harmony, fertility, peace and tranquility
  • Turquoise: Fertility, abundance and rejuvenation of spirit
  • Blue: Mystery, desire for unattainable
  • White: Innocence, purity, humility, heavenly, marriage and new beginnings
  • Gold or Yellow: Friendship, joy, good luck, welcome back and remembrance
  • Yellow with Red Tip: Falling in Love and friendship
  • Orange: Passion, desire, energy and pride
  • Black: Sorrow, death, loss, courage, sorrow and resistance
  • Red Rosebud: Loveliness and purity
  • White Rosebud: Symbol of girlhood

Sending a combination of colored roses depicts different emotions and symbolism such as:

Pale Colors: Friendship and sociability

Red and White: Unity

Pink and White: Unending love

Red and Yellow: Happiness

Orange and Yellow: Passionate and romantic thoughts

Antique garden roses will usually only bloom once during the season and are always worth the wait. Newer hybrid styles are often smaller is size compared to the vintage species but will flower throughout the growing season.

Anchor Cremation Urn for an American Sailor

June 13, 2014 urngarden.com

Recently, a mother’s story about her son’s Navy service was so touching that it brought tears to my eyes. She called about an urn we carry, a beautiful midnight blue vase with a shimmering anchor made from mother of pearl. No mother should have to go urn shopping for her child, but when she saw it she knew it was the one.

Anchor Cremation Urn

He was only 34 and had been stationed on the USS Ronald Reagan during a humanitarian mission to Japan during the 2011 tsunami. After the Fukushima nuclear power plant meltdown the ship sailed through the fallout three times. Over 70 sailors on board have suffered serious heath issues and half have developed cancer.

His mother thinks he might be the first fatality stemming from this mission. It’s timely, as disturbing news continues to surface regarding VA hospitals and treatment, or lack of treatment that our veterans continue to receive.

This young man leaves behind two young children and a family that adored him. We wish them all peace and healing during this difficult time.

In a previous post we went into more detail about the spiritual symbolism of the anchor and it’s meaning.

Scattering Ashes On Superstition Mountains

May 12, 2014 urngarden.com

The late Don Imus mentioned that the ashes of his mother and brother were scattered in the Arizona Superstition Mountains. Not being familiar with this area, the name of the mountains got my attention, and after doing a little research I discovered that it’s a popular place for ash scattering ceremonies. My search also turned up this video of a precarious cremains scattering attempt.

Scattering one’s cremated ashes from hills and mountaintops is not an unusual practice and your funeral director can help you plan this type of memorial service. Not long after we read about this area, a funeral director from the Superstition Funeral Home called and we talked about the practice of ash scattering. This is something they do for the families that request it and after the memorial, the funeral home presents the family a certificate with satellite coordinates of the location that the ashes were dispersed.

In addition to scattering urns, he told me a popular style at that part of the country is the Sunset in Desert cremation urn.sunset in the desert cremation urn

There’s a spiritual healing that comes with watching the ashes blow away in the wind while overseeing some of nature’s greatest landscapes. Superstition Mountains outside Phoenix, Arizona, is one such location.

Commonly called “The Superstitions,” this small mountain range is a growing haven for those wanting to scatter their loved one’s cremated remains from a location that was created from an array of natural forces and creates a feeling of mystery and mystique.

History of Superstition Mountains
Superstition Mountains is not your typical mountain range. The welded tuff, breccia, granite, dacite and basalt came together following intensive volcanic activity. Millions of years ago, the volcanoes on this area collapsed and produced depressions. The formations you see today were caused by the thrusting of lava.

Legend has it that these mountains are also the home of the infamous Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine, a very rich gold mine supposedly discovered after 1863 by German prospector Jacob Waltz, who lived most of his life in the mountains. Mine lore states that the alleged treasures originally belonged to either the Peralta family of Mexico or the Apache Tribe following a massacre of Mexican miners. Before Waltz died, he left a poorly drawn map of the hidden mine, which has drawn treasure hunters from all over the world.

While Superstition Mountains is said to be home to the Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine, it is also said to have an Apache Indian curse. Over the years, there have been several “uncertain” deaths and reports of missing people of those who go searching for treasure.

Whether you are scattering the ashes or need to find an urn that works for burial or keeping in the home, we can help.
